Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
Many people feel exhausted during the daytime, even when they strive to get plenty of rest each night. Excessive daytime sleepiness, or hypersomnia, can make it difficult to be as productive as you desire. There are a few underlying sleep disorders that can cause excessive daytime sleepiness, such as sleep apnea, or it can be caused by narcolepsy or other primary conditions. If you have been experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, treatment is available at Julie Zweig, MD Integrative Sleep & ENT in Alpharetta, GA.
What Is Hypersomnia?
When you get enough rest or sleep and still feel tired, it may be a medical condition. While many people have days where they are fatigued, hypersomnia is an ongoing or chronic condition where those affected have constant excessive daytime sleepiness. They may fall asleep multiple times per day – some may also have narcolepsy – even when they get adequate sleep each night. Some of the other symptoms of hypersomnia include:
- Sleeping longer than average yet remaining sleepy during the day
- Feeling groggy in the morning
- Irritability
- Hallucinations
- Trouble concentrating
- Slow speech and reactions
- Poor memory
- Headaches
- Naps do not improve energy levels
There are different types of hypersomnia. Excessive daytime sleepiness can be a secondary condition, a symptom of another medical issues. These include sleep apnea, obesity, mood disorders, Parkinson’s disease and many others. It can also be primary hypersomnia, which can include different variants of narcolepsy and idiopathic (no known cause).
Hypersomnia is a chronic condition that does not have a cure. However, there are treatments and therapies that can provide relief. Dr. Julie Zweig is a board certified sleep medicine and ENT specialist that utilizes integrative and functional medicine approaches to create personalized treatment plans for her patients with hypersomnia.
