Causes of Sore Throats
The throat contains the larynx, trachea, tonsils and muscles. It begins at the back or top of the mouth and extends down to where it meets the esophagus. The throat is susceptible to infection due to the viruses and bacteria that flow into throat tissues, which can cause a sore throat. Discomfort can also be caused by strain of the vocal cords. If you have a sore throat, it may be caused by:

- Strep throat or throat infections
- Laryngitis
- Tonsilitis
- Throat or oral cancer
- GERD or LPR (acid reflux)
Most sore throats improve within a week when related to a bacterial or viral infection. However, some infections like strep throat can pose risks for serious conditions like rheumatic fever. If a sore throat persists for longer than a week, it is advisable to seek sore throat treatment from an ENT specialist.
